A NEW multi-million dollar ward was officially opened at Casey Hospital last week.
The $22.2 million sub-acute care facility was opened at the Berwick-based hospital on Friday 17 October by Health Minister David Davis.
The 30-bed facility has been introduced in order to provide care for elderly patients as they recover after hospital treatment.
Rehabilitation services for patients with neurological and orthopaedic conditions will also be available in the ward.
The $22.2 million in funding for the new ward was provided through the Commonwealth’s National Partnership Agreement, according to Mr Davis.
Speaking at the opening, he said Casey Hospital is now well placed to meet the demand for rehabilitation services in Melbourne’s rapidly growing and ageing outer south-east suburbs.
“The facility has a patient dining room, therapy space, allied health consultation rooms, a mobility garden to support rehabilitation and larger than standard bedrooms which enable therapy to be undertaken in a patient’s bedroom,” Mr Davis said.
“Small lounge areas also provide a supportive environment where family and friends can visit.”
Joining Mr Davis at Friday’s opening were Gembrook MP Brad Battin and Liberal candidates Susan Serey, Geoff Ablett and Amanda Stapledon.
“Over the past 10 years Casey Hospital has grown significantly, with the emergency department now operating 24 hours and treating more than 52,000 patients a year,” Mr Battin said.
“Thanks to this new purpose-built facility, the former sub-acute ward will be used to treat general patients and allow an increase in the provision of maternity services.”
