A GROUP of VCAL students from an Endeavour Hills high school have been hard at work building a new cubby house for children at a nearby kinder.
This year 16 VCAL students from Maranatha Christian School spent five days setting up the cubby house and a stage area at the Doveton Early Learning Centre.
Technology teacher Paul Lock, who helped oversee the project, said it allowed the VCAL students from the Endeavour Hills campus to develop their construction skills in a practical setting.
“Five days were spent on site building the cubby and students also learned to liaise with a client and make modifications to suit their needs,” he said.
“Two teams of eight undertook this project seeing it through to completion.
“The project was also designed to teach these students professionalism and working on a building site in teams, as we aim to develop students so they are work-ready when they leave us to get an apprenticeship.”
Maranatha’s VCAL program consists of four components to be completed at an intermediate and senior level, including literacy and numeracy, industry specific skills, personal development skills, and work related skills.
And it’s not just the VCAL program that is flourishing at Maranatha.
The school garden continued to grow over summer, with eager grade four students able to pick out a range of zucchinis and cucumbers upon their return to school.
The grade four students cleaned, pruned and watered the vegetables, leading to the creation of their giant zucchini which they now have in pride of place outside the classroom.
