A WEEKLY chat over a newspaper can do wonders for English skills.
Jeanette Walde brings in the latest news to AMES Dandenong, using it to launch into her informal English lessons with one of her three migrant students.
Ms Walde is among 100 volunteer tutors who are pitching in to help a growing client base of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers at AMES Dandenong.
According to AMES spokesman Luke Treadwell, the chats were a crucial way to learn the local lingo as well as learning about negotiating life in Australia.
The meetings are also often the beginning of long-standing friendships between tutors and clients.
More tutors are needed to visit students in their homes in Greater Dandenong, Casey, Cardinia, Frankston and Mornington Peninsula.
Training is provided.
AMES’s training sessions for new tutors runs on Tuesdays for the next five weeks.
To register, phone Danijela Siljegovic on 8791 2441.
