SFL DIVISION 2 – Round 3
THE move to SFL is paying off handsomely for Keysborough, with its 15-point win over Hampton rocketing the Burra to the top of Division 2.
In tough conditions at Rowley Allan Reserve, the Burra held their nerve to hunt down the visitors, who took a nine-point lead at the half.
Only three-behinds flew through the sticks in a rough-and-tumble last term, but Keysborough was able to hold its lead to post its third win in as many SFL matches.
Tyson King (five goals), Geoff Humphreys and Cameron Dalton were best afield as Keysborough now heads to Caulfield on Saturday in a first-versus-third showdown.
Springvale Districts’ slow start bit them on the behind once again as Heatherton flew out of the blocks to inflict a 19-point loss.
If only some of their six first-quarter behinds were converted into goals then the Demons would have stood a chance, but giving a 25-point margin by quarter-time rarely bodes well for a side. Despite chasing all match, Districts continued to fight as James Gough (three goals), Peter Heng (two goals) and Brad Dight shone brightest for the visitors. The Demons’ wayward kicking would prove lethal in the end as Heatherton maximised its scoring chances.
Doveton Eagles falls to last place in Division 2 following a 69-point hammering by Skye.
DIVISION 3
LOSSES as far as the eye can see greeted Dandenong-area SFL Division 3 teams on Saturday as Lyndale, Dandenong, Endeavour Hills and Sandown were all vanquished in the rain.
Sandown, 4.9 (33), could have used next week’s star recruit – Brendan Fevola – this week as it could not kick a winning tally against Ashwood 14.10 (94). The Cobras will open their change rooms and new-look pavilion on Saturday and face Lyndale with the former AFL super-boot ready to kick a bag at Edinburgh Reserve.
Endeavour Hills tasted its first loss in 2015 as Carrum Patterson Lakes took a 39-point triumph. The Falcons were led by Shane Peake (five goals) while Shannon Rainey and Nathan Strom also excelled.
Lyndale failed to impress in its 42-point loss to Mount Waverley, despite Brett Tosh and Trent Isbister working hard across the field.
Dandenong suffered a 49-point defeat at the hands of South Yarra, plummeting the Redlegs to dead last in Division 3.
VAFA DIVISION 2 – Round 3
STORMING home to mount its case for a VAFA premiership, St John’s brushed aside South Melbourne Districts in a 171-point demolition.
From the first bounce the JOCs were in control and it only got worse from there for the Swans as Ben McGee’s men ran circles around the visitors.
A nine-goal second term – led by Aaron Thornton (seven goals), Kane Arnold (six goals) and Rohan Scott (five goals) spelled the end for South Melbourne Districts before the pain was amplified even further.
The only downside for St John’s – despite the ebullient win – was its kicking conversion as 25 behinds remains far too many for a side with premiership aspirations.
Skipper Glenn Costas – with a casual four goals to his name as well – was best afield while Scott and Liam O’Connor also featured prominently.
Sitting second with three wins and a healthy percentage of 247.02, St John’s faces Elsternwick away on Saturday.
