Legal help for Centrelink aid

PEOPLE running into Centrelink hurdles are eligible for free legal advice at Victoria Legal Aid’s Dandenong office.
VLA commonwealth entitlements program manager Len Jaffit said many people didn’t realise they have the right to request a review of Centrelink decisions.
“Many people struggle to understand Centrelink’s complex processes and legal help is important in helping them to examine all their options,” Mr Jaffit said.
VLA regional managing lawyer Elissa Scott said the service was particularly important in Greater Dandenong, which has significant youth unemployment, large numbers of residents unfamiliar with English and a high percentage of people living with a disability.
The advice can help clients under Centrelink investigation, charged with social security offences or when their benefits are reduced, refused or overpaid.
In some cases, VLA lawyers have helped people who were unfairly asked to repay mistakenly overpaid benefits.
“It helps to know your rights and options when you are notified of a Centrelink decision, especially if you think you’re been unfairly treated,” Ms Scott said.
“The consequences for people relying on Centrelink payments and having their benefits incorrectly reduced or stopped can be very serious, so it’s vital they get legal advice sooner rather than later.”
Legal advice is available at the Dandenong office from Monday to Friday.
For an appointment, phone 9767 7111 or the multi-lingual help line on 1300 792 387.
