Art that’s all our own

HOMEGROWN art is now even more accessible in Casey thanks to the unveiling last week of three new modern art spaces.
The Casey Council worked in partnership with the Casey-Cardinia Library Corporation to install unique art display systems at Cranbourne, Doveton and Endeavour Hills libraries, which support a wide variety of art, including digital and 3D works.
Casey mayor Mick Morland open the new spaces on Friday 21 August.
Cr Morland said the council was delighted to provide three new exhibition spaces to complement the popular Civic Centre Art Space in Narre Warren, providing more opportunities to showcase talented local artists to the community.
“The display systems are adaptable and the railing enables installations of digital display panels, moveable gallery lighting and hanging systems which provide alternatives to the traditional way paintings have been displayed in galleries,” Cr Morland said.
“Local artists are able to showcase traditional paintings and 3D art alongside contemporary mediums of digital and sound installations.
“The library art spaces will support sound-based art works and provide audiences the opportunity to plug in to a headphone system – we’ve come a long way from art being just a painting on the wall.
“The council recognises the importance of art in expanding our culture and proudly supports the expansion of the arts.
“The spaces have launched with pieces from many local artists and I encourage residents to head along and check them out for themselves. There’s everything from paintings and drawings to jewellery and animation on the digital screens.”
Application packs are available for artists wishing to exhibit in the 2016 City of Casey Art Spaces Program. To apply, call 9705 5200 or email arts@casey.vic.gov.au
