THE Doveton Netball Club won’t be able to survive if it doesn’t acquire a second court at its home ground, according to its president.
With only the one court at its Robinson Reserve facility, president Amanda Dean said her club did not have the capacity to host a final, even if Doveton finished high enough on the ladder to be deserving of one.
“Our club can never tend to our league to host finals,” Ms Dean said.
“Clubs who host a final might make $10,000 to $15,000 just from a day … it’s an enormous disadvantage to our club.
“We struggle to compete with the bigger clubs like Berwick and Cranbourne.”
During the season the team is forced to rent a court up the road to host around five of its teams, which comes at a considerable cost.
“It comes at quite a big cost to our club and a fairly substantial cost to the footy club overall,” Ms Dean said.
“For the nine games we host during the year, there’s potentially 100 people not coming through the football gate, and each of those families pays roughly $10 at the canteen.
“We just can’t get the numbers through on one court.”
Ms Dean told Star News she has been holding discussions with Casey Council representatives about her concerns.
It’s understood one solution includes looking into the viability of converting some nearby tennis courts which are currently leased out by Casey Council, and managed by the Waverley Tennis Association.
