Mercury runs free

By Cam Lucadou-wells

A MERCURY spill has led to the closure of a residential street in Doveton during an eight-hour clean-up operation.
A CFA spokeswoman said it took time to identify the Camellia Court spill, which was reported about 10.45am on 16 August.
Five CFA vehicles as well as the EPA, police and a private liquid waste removalist were at the scene until the spill was under control about 6.30pm.
Nearby residents were in the dark about the nature of the spill. Some speculated to Star News that the operation must have involved cleaning up a meth lab.
The CFA spokeswoman said residents’ health was never under threat. The spill was cordoned off and contained over a 15-metre area on the court’s tarmac, she said.
