Santa stitched up to spread happiness

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

THE Endeavour Hills Neighbourhood Centre is doing everything it can to bring some Christmas cheer to the community in 2014.
This year the knitting and crochet group from the Endeavour Hills Uniting Care Neighbourhood Centre has again been creating and donating more than 200 knitted items for those less fortunate, in time for the festive season.
A range of blankets, knitted toys and children’s jumpers have been donated to the local Andrew’s Centre, Cornerstone, the Guardian Pharmacy Angel Program and the Knit One Give One (KOGO) group.
The women involved in the knitting team are in their 50s to their early 70s and meet every Wednesday afternoon during the school term.
“The ladies have done a magnificent job donating their time and materials, and their efforts are very much appreciated,” Endeavour Hills Neighbourhood Centre manager Bev Lamont said.
“Since October they have made another 29 Santas, 64 knitted bears and 17 children’s jumpers.
“We are very proud of their generosity and community spirit.”
Ms Lamont said the group started as a social get-together, but quickly became a platform for the volunteers to give back to those who needed it most in the community.
And those people for who Christmas is otherwise is a difficult time.
“It’s really rewarding and the group had really bonded,” Ms Lamont said.
“They support each other.”
The group encourages new members who love to knit and crochet, or those who would like to learn.
The cost is $3 per session, with tea and coffee provided.
Donations of eight-ply wool are greatly appreciated.
