There’s more up Emrys’ sleeve

By JASON ADAMS

The ever improving Emrys announced himself as one of the stars of the future on Thursday at Sandown Park after a dominant come-from-behind win.
Emrys was moderate to begin from box two, then gained a clean run around the first bend to settle third approaching the back straight. Emrys threatened danger approaching the final bend as he poured the pressure on early leader Dyna Nico. He then took control of the race to win by an increasing two-and-a-half lengths.
Owner Boris Bertschik was delighted with Emrys’ performance, however is adamant we are yet to see the best of his young star.
“Tiggerlong Amigo gave him a slight check early in the race, the way he got balanced and accelerated was really impressive,” Bertschik said.
“He improved significantly on last week’s win – last night he ran 29.29 and his trainer Mario Briganti is confident he still has a bit of improvement up his sleeve.”
Despite having just the 21 career starts, Emrys is no stranger to Group class racing having mixed it with some of the sports heavyweights during the Group 1 Silver Chief series.
“He ran fifth in the Silver Chief final, but there’s no shame in finishing behind Above All, Dyna Villa and Dyna Double One – they are seriously fast greyhounds,” he said.
Having just recently turned two-years-old, Emrys has already earned $32,645 in prize money, and connections now have eyes on the $550,000 Group 1 Australian Cup at The Meadows.
“We’ve already nominated him for the Australian Cup, it’s just a matter of him gaining a spot in a heat or whether he needs to run in next week’s Preliminaries,” Bertschik said.
