JAMES Cook Primary School welcomed its new student leaders last month.
A special assembly was held at the Endeavour Hills school where the year six leaders for 2015 were formally presented with their badges and congratulated by their peers.
International cricketer Sarah Elliott was the special guest at the assembly and gave a motivational speech to the students about her experiences as a member for the Australian cricket team.
Sarah, along with principal Kathy Sharp and School Council president Vicki Dikolli presented the new leaders with their badges.
Teacher Filomena Garner applauded the initiative and individuality that had seen the new student leaders take hold of their opportunities.
“The leadership opportunity for these students provides experiences that enable them to take on responsibility and have a voice and an input into the direction of the school,” she said.
“Our newest school leaders are looking forward to the year ahead and making the most of their 2015 year at James Cook Primary School.”
The presentation included Specialist Leaders and Student Representative Council (SRC) members.
Specialist leaders were nominated by the specialist teachers, art, music, ICT, library and Green Team.
The SRC members are elected by the students’ peers from their own class.
The current James Cook year six students were encouraged to participate in the leadership selection process at the end of last year.
All candidates wrote their own speech and presented it to their peers, teachers and the principal.
The group then voted for the student they believe would make the best leader for 2015.
There were 14 students shortlisted to participate in an interview with Ms Sharp from which this year’s school and house captains were selected.
