New year lunch lesson

STUDENTS throughout Casey welcomed the Chinese New Year last month.
Gleneagles Secondary College in Endeavour Hills, which offered Chinese Mandarin lessons for the first time this year, held a special celebration to mark the occasion.
Leading up to the Chinese New Year, students spent lunchtimes learning about the new year and zodiac animals, participating in Chinese New Year paper-cut, calligraphy and lantern-making activities.
They also sampled Chinese New Year food and took part in a chopsticks competition.
“Chinese is often being labelled a difficult language to learn from both parents and children,” Gleneagles librarian Lynne Moller said.
“At Gleneagles Secondary College, we focus on making learning Chinese fun,“ Ms Moller said adding that characters are learnt by drawing in the air with fingers first, before practising the writing of characters on exercise books.
“Students are encouraged to speak the language out loud in class and to each other.
“Drums and music are often used to assist students pick up the rhythm of Chinese language.”
News photographer ROB CAREW stopped by Gleneagles to capture the celebrations.
