Mentors to guide guides

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

SCHOOLGIRLS from across Casey gathered together last month to celebrate the 20th Girl Guides Women of Note mentor breakfast.
Roughly 75 year 11 female students from local schools attended the event at the Casey Council chambers in which a number of invited mentors from different fields spoke to guests about their potential career paths.
Kay Rankin, who has presided over the event for most of the 20 years, said the anniversary was a special occasion, capped off by keynote speaker Angela Madden.
“This year the guest speaker was Captain Angela Madden from the Australian Army and she enthralled the young women with her story,” Ms Rankin said.
“Having been appointed into the Australian Regular Army as a General Service Officer in January 2006, she attended the Australian Defence Force Academy and was awarded a Bachelor of Science in 2008.
“Captain Madden spent time in Afghanistan Dubai before being deployed to Sinai, Egypt… all before the age of 28 years.”
Ms Rankin was also presented with a 20-year service certificate at the breakfast by Casey councillor Amanda Stapledon.
“Women of Note together with Girl Guides Victoria are extremely grateful for the support given over the last twenty years by the City of Casey, who not only help with the administration of the event but provide their council chambers to hold the breakfast,” Ms Rankin said.
“Thanks to all our wonderful sponsors who made it possible to help our local young women to grow into self-respecting and responsible members of the community.”
