School to make upgrade available to other students

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH

ONE of Melbourne’s largest co-educational government schools, with more than 300 students in each year, has undergone a major arts upgrade and is now ready for community use.
The stage three $10 million works at Dandenong High School were completed late last year and were officially opened by Education Minister James Merlino on Friday 17 April.
The Melaleuca building and refurbished senior science wing will be available for use by other schools and community groups.
It includes a double court gymnasium as well as a performing arts centre and professional standard recording studio, dance studio and 350 seat theatrette.
“These new facilities will be a great asset for Dandenong High School and the local community,” Mr Merlino said.
Mr Merlino said the new facilities such as these across Victoria would help give children the best start in life.
“Dandenong High School is recognised for its excellence in education, and these facilities will help students learn and achieve success,” he said.
Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the day was significant for students, staff and parents.
“These new facilities will open up more opportunities and support the school in providing a first-rate education,” she said.
Dandenong High School principal Susan Ogden said the day was not just a school celebration but a community one.
Mr Merlino told the school that it would receive another $3 million for the final part of the upgrade which will include home economics, woodwork and metal work rooms and a new technology centre.
