Greens point to train jam

TRAINS running through the Dandenong corridor are the state’s most overcrowded, the Greens say.
South Eastern Metropolitan Region Greens MP Nina Springle said new train loading data showed 39 per cent of passengers travelling along the Dandenong corridor in the morning peak were on overloaded trains.
“This isn’t just uncomfortable, it’s dangerous,” she said.
“It’s no wonder that the roads are gridlocked when the trains are overflowing and unreliable.”
The Dandenong corridor includes services originating from Pakenham, Berwick, Cranbourne, Dandenong, Westall and Oakleigh stations in the morning and terminating at those stations in the afternoon.
“The only way to free up space on trains is by running more services,” Ms Springle said.
“We need to start planning the rollout of modern train signals, as the ancient system in place now is unreliable and can’t fit enough services into the morning and afternoon peak periods.”
