SOME of Doveton College’s most recent graduates are on their way to a very happy new year after completing a course in English language.
“They can now feel confident answering the phone, making an appointment, asking for a price at the shops and communicating with their child’s school – this course is a very good thing.”
Brace Education and Training teacher Nivas Nivandhana taught the nine-month English course at Doveton College this year and was delighted to see her students graduate with new life skills.
“It gives them confidence to live in Australia, the course is life changing for the women,” Ms Nivandhana said.
Seven women will graduate with a certificate I and II in English language on Thursday 17 December in front of their Doveton College peers, which for many will be their own children.
“They were taught how to write, read and speak as well computer skills and numeracy,” Ms Nivandhana said.
“It’s great for the entire community and for their children as well who got dropped off by their mum at the classroom door.”
Ms Nivandhana said she was most excited to listen to one of her Afghanistan students make a speech at the graduation ceremony.
“She isn’t fluent but she can communicate in English which is something she hasn’t been able to do for the past eight years she has lived in Australia.
“She would just stay at home and cook and clean and look after her family and couldn’t speak a word of English before starting the course.
“This has got her out of her comfort zone and she is much more confident,” Ms Nivandhana said.
