Netball in council court

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

CASEY council will again meet with representatives from the Doveton Netball Club who claim they won’t be able to survive if they don’t acquire a second court to play on.
With only the one court at its Robinson Reserve facility, president Amanda Dean has previously told Star News her club did not have the capacity to host a final, even if Doveton finished high enough on the ladder to be deserving of one.
But after a petition was presented to River Gum Ward Councillor Damien Rosario last month, council has resolved to meet with the club executive to “identify opportunities to accommodate their growth”.
It’s understood one option includes building two additional courts at Robinson Reserve.
“They were very clear they needed help and Cr (Wayne) Smith and I jumped onto this,” Cr Rosario told Star News.
During the season, the team is forced to rent a court up the road to host around five of its teams, which comes at a considerable cost.
“It comes at quite a big cost to our club and a fairly substantial cost to the footy club overall,” Ms Dean said.
“For the nine games we host during the year, there’s potentially 100 people not coming through the football gate, and each of those families pays roughly $10 at the canteen.
“We just can’t get the numbers through on one court.”
