Come on girls, give cricket a go!

By Nick Creely

Dandenong Women’s Cricket Club (DWCC) is expanding to three senior teams in 2016/’17 and wants women, experienced or non-experienced, to join.
It’s been well over five years since DWCC fielded a side in Cricket Victoria’s Women’s Community Cricket Competition (VWCCC), with the Lions instead focusing on their senior teams in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition.
But the club has changed its focus and will now look to attract women who are new to the game or young girls coming through junior cricket.
Club secretary Emma Gallagher believes the expansion into the VWCCC will convince women to give cricket a go.
“It’s great to provide an option with less commitment and travel and we hope that this will means more women come and give cricket a go.
“The WCCC team won’t play long weekends and will only travel as far as Clayton, Pakenham Upper/Toomuc and Frankston,” Gallagher said.
The fixtures for the upcoming season have yet to be released, but games will be predominantly played on a mix of Saturdays and Sundays with training every Thursday and an optional Tuesday.
“We have a great environment at the club where all new players are always welcome and we really try to create a safe, fun and friendly environment.
“We believe in Cricket Australia’s vision for cricket to be a sport for all Australians and want to ensure all girls and women have the opportunity to experience this great game.
“We have plenty of players who come to us who have never picked up a ball before, but we also have a fantastic team of accredited coaches and players with experience right up to Australian level, so we have the support to build their skills,” Gallagher said.
DWCC would like to welcome anyone interested in joining their cricket family make contact via their email dandenongwomenscc@gmail.com.au.
For anyone not interested in playing, the club always welcomes volunteers and supporters.
