Gymnastics clubs takes the lead in getting involved

By Victoria Stone-Meadows

Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre and Berwick Leisure Centre had their dedication to inclusive gymnastics recognised at the Gymnastics Victoria Awards Night recently.
Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre was awarded the Inclusive Leader Club of the Year honour for making sure everyone has the chance to get involved in gymnastics.
Through the clubs’ Access All Abilities Gymnastics Program, children with a wide range of physical and intellectual disabilities have had the opportunity to learn and develop in a safe and inclusive atmosphere.
Endeavour Hills also won the award in 2014 however this year the centre was also nominated for Large Club of the Year.
Gymnastics co-ordinator at Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre Monica Ellis said the program is designed to cater for all kinds of children who were interested in gymnastics.
“We focus on fundamental movement patterns and locomotive skills to build both physical and mental co-ordination and strength, all while having a fun and interactive experience,” she said.
“The program’s success is due to our coaches working together with the families and occupational therapists to cater and individualise the program to suit the child’s needs.
“The feedback we receive from both parents and occupational therapists is always positive and uplifting.
“The kids love coming to gymnastics and we feel we are really making a difference in their lives.”
Berwick Leisure Centre was also recognised as an Inclusion Club Leader which means the facility has specialised staff and programs to cater for people with disabilities.
Anyone who would like to know more about the Access All Abilities Gymnastics Program can contact monica.ellis@ymca.org.au or call Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre on 9213 1400.
