Grassroots democracy at play

Endeavour Hills students got a taste of political campaigning and voting.
Southern Cross Primary School held a mock election during the last week of term two as part of its problem-based learning (PBL) program.
Students were given a problem at the start of term, and developed a project to solve it.
They were learning about democracy and were asked to find students who would best represent their needs to the local government.
Students formed political parties and campaigned.
On election day, each party gave a final speech and presentation to the middle and upper primary school about the main things students wanted to improve school.
Their campaigns included longer breaks, no school uniforms and a later school start time.
Students received voting slips and cast their votes in booths.
The winning party was The Southern Stars Government, which believed students should have more science in schools.
